چکیده

Synopsis The impaired strength of osteoporotic cortical bone is largely a consequence of increased porosity, which manifests in increased bone water fraction. Hence, knowledge of bone water (BW) content would provide an indirect measure of pore volume fraction. Surface interactions in the tight spaces of the lacuno-canalicular system shorten the lifetime of the BW proton signal to less than 1msec, therefore requiring solid-state imaging techniques for its capture and detection. In this work, we developed new ultra-short echo-time (UTE) radial imaging acquisition and processing capabilities for precise quantification of BW in cortical bone.

Ultrashort Echo Time Imaging of Cortical Bone at 7 Tesla Field Strength

Introduction MRI at ultra-high field (UHF) strength of 7 Tesla has been increasingly used and optimized for in vivo applications over the past few years. In particular, the increased signal to noise ratio (SNR) renders this new modality very attractive for imaging soft tissues in the human body. More solid or semi-solid tissues such as trabecular and cortical bone provide little to no signal in...

Feasibility of assessing bone matrix and mineral properties in vivo by combined solid-state 1H and 31P MRI

PURPOSE To develop and evaluate an integrated imaging protocol for bone water and phosphorus quantification in vivo by solid-state 1H and 31P MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS All studies were HIPAA-compliant and were performed with institutional review board approval and written informed consent. Proton (1H) ultra-short echo-time (UTE) and phosphorus (31P) zero echo-time (ZTE) sequences were design...

Validation of quantitative bound- and pore-water imaging in cortical bone.

PURPOSE To implement and validate a previously proposed ultra-short echo time method for measuring collagen-bound- and pore-water concentrations in bone based on their T2 differences. METHODS Clinically compatible ultra-short echo time image sequences for quantitative T2 -based bound and pore-water imaging in bone were implemented and validated on a 3T human scanner and a 4.7T small bore syst...

Time Efficient 3D Radial UTE Sampling with Fully Automatic Delay Compensation on a Clinical 3T MR Scanner

This work's aim was to minimize the acquisition time of a radial 3D ultra-short echo-time (UTE) sequence and to provide fully automated, gradient delay compensated, and therefore artifact free, reconstruction. The radial 3D UTE sequence (echo time 60 μs) was implemented as single echo acquisition with center-out readouts and improved time efficient spoiling on a clinical 3T scanner without hard...

Ultrashort TE Imaging with Rescaled Digital Subtraction (UTE RDS)

INTRODUCTION Imaging of short T2 tissues often requires not only a short TE so that signal from very short T2 species can be detected, but efficient suppression of the signal from surrounding long T2 species which may have much higher MR signals (1-4). There are three major long T2 suppression techniques: 1) A long 90° pulse followed by gradient spoiling to selectively saturate long T2 species ...
